Mystery Person helps Badlabecques and Les Amis Choir Resolve
Copyright Issue with The Beatles
Now that a contract has been signed we can reveal that an unknown person, most likely an employee of music publishing company Sony ATV, has stepped in to reverse a previous decision to deny us permission to release a cover version of ‘With a Little Help from my Friends’ featuring Les Amis Choir.
We were originally due to release our latest album ‘Cocolîncheux!’ at the Jersey Arts Centre in April this year, but after months of preparations, and a successful crowdfunding campaign, the setback prompted us to delay the record rather than drop the song with Les Amis.
However, it seems that the JEP article about the issue eventually found its way to an unknown person who seems to have pulled a string or two.
Lead singer Kit Ashton says: “It’s a bit of a mystery to be honest but whatever the details are we’re over the moon about it! I had tried writing to Sir Paul McCartney but had no joy – then out of the blue I get an email from Sony offering us a contract! I couldn’t believe it, but there it was. We were all completely delighted of course.”
We believe that the most likely turn of events is that Sony’s change of mind was thanks in part to Jersey-based music manager and promoter Niall Mac, of Stoked Music. He read the JEP article and decided to get in touch with a contact at Sony who said they would ‘see what they can do’.
Kit: “My contact at Sony’s copyright department doesn’t know why things turned around, so it seems whoever it was that finally made it happen doesn’t want to take public credit – but we are all very grateful. If this hadn’t have happened we would have had to go back to the drawing board and record a new song with Les Amis – now the album can go out as planned. Ch’est mangnifique!”
PR/Marketing and Fundraising manager for Les Amis Lauren Carré said: “It’s true what they say, you really do get by with a little help from your friends, friends you didn’t even know you had! We are very grateful to the mystery person that intervened and thrilled that Sony has given permission for the track to go be released. The choir thoroughly enjoyed recording the song with the Badlabecques and are delighted with the decision. We would like to thank Kit for his efforts to keep our collaboration on the album, we can’t wait to hear the rest of it.”
We are hoping to have a new release date for the album confirmed by the end of May.
